With the first month of January coming to an end, it’s never too late to set new goals for 2018. The middle of January is probably the BEST time to set goals and really focus on what you want to get out of this year because the holiday festivities and all celebrations are out of the way.
With that being said, here are 5 tips on how to make this year the best year yet in terms of success and happiness. So if you’re ready for a bigger and brighter year, here’s how:
1. Get Serious About Saving
This is no doubt something I struggle with personally because who can resist a nice pair of heels or to dine out at the newest restaurant opening? Now that I’m 22 I feel as though it’s more important than ever to set a budget and no matter what your age, it’s never too early (or late) to think about proper ‘grown up things’ e.g. those unimaginable what if’s, a car and even a mortgage!
Be realistic with how much money you want to put away a week because you’re more likely to stick through with it and not get discouraged when you realise you weren’t able to put anything away. Start small because any savings is better than $0 in your bank account at the end of the day.
2. Expand Your Knowledge
One of my favourite sayings is that you’re never old until you stop learning and it’s so true! Expanding your knowledge whether it’s learning something new or using your mind in an active way give you a sense of purpose.
There is SO MUCH out there that one can absorb and with the aid of the Internet and all it’s invaluable information at our fingertips, we can use that to our advantage to better ourselves. There are so many free courses, tutorials and books to read so find something that sparks your curiosity or rekindle an old passion.
3. Plan A Vision Board
Visualising your goals and writing them out so they’re not all jumbled in your mind sets the frame for knowing exactly what you want out of life and also how to get it. Vision boards are so therapeutic and is a great creative outlet to relax yet at the same time plan your future. I normally use Canva to create my vision board and source my images from Pinterest.
I love looking back at my vision board at the end of the year to realise how much I have achieved and it’s just proof that if you really set your mind on something, it can happen!
4. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Try and aim to do one thing a month that you would normally stray away from. It can be something as simple as walking to uni or work when you’re normally one who hates physical activity, to volunteering to public speak. I’ve always been afraid of needles and last year I decided to take the plunge and get a double piercing on my ear! Even though it seems so small and insignificant, I felt proud of myself and the reward was how stylish the ear piercings looked on me!
5. Eat/Live Healthier
This is another one of my weaknesses because I love chocolate and have such a sweet tooth, but this year I am going to consciously be more aware in making healthier decisions. Obviously you can’t total out all junk food but if you make small decisions such as getting less sugar or opting for the healthier alternative on your usual take-outs, it all adds up.
Even if you feel as though you have absolutely zero time to exercise, try to fit in at least 20minutes of physical activity. I love doing exercises in the morning because I feel so accomplished and sets the tone for the rest of my day. After you get into the habit, it then becomes a lifestyle habit.
That’s not to say that I’ve been strict on my routine, there have been times where I’ve slacked off. Don’t be disheartened at yourself and wake up the next day with a clean slate and a clear mindset.
