HOW TO: Get Clear Skin

Your face is the first thing that a person looks at, and is the first impression upon meeting someone. Acne, spots, blemishes and redness are inevitable and are completely normal factors of being human. And although pimples are irritating and smack bang in the middle of the face, it is so important to realise that firstly, nobody really notices a few spots here or there. In fact 99% of the population have experienced pimples or some sort of acne so either they know what it feels like and/or they don’t really care. Let’s face it, you probably have more important things to take into account other than the bunch of blackheads your co worker has.

The first thing to know coming from someone who suffered from mild acne during my teenage years, is that patience is virtue. Those 2-3 years where my face resembled a pizza that has gone off felt like the longest years of my life, and 5 years later I can still vividly recall the pain, torment and embarrassment of what my face looked like. In saying that, nothing is permanent and in due time, they will be a worry of the past.

Secondly, know your skin type. From there, you are able to distinguish what cleansers, ingredients, exfoliants and even environmental factors can help reduce and eliminate pimples. In high school, I was desperate for a solution, and I wanted it to be instant. I literally tried everything from pills to lotions, organic scrubs, highly commercialised products imported from Japan and the US, acidic cleansers, home remedies and nothing seemed to be working. It only aggravated my skin because they weren’t the right solution for my skin type. If you have oily skin, look for cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid and try exfoliating once a week. For dry skin, you wouldn’t need a scrub or anything harsh. Do your research and stick to a beauty regime that works for you and be patient.

Dismiss the myth that ‘chaotic’ skin means dirty skin. That is the farthest from the truth. I used to think that my face was constantly dirty and once resorted to using a bar of soap to wash away my impurities. Boy did that do damage. There are many myths that dispel pimples to one simple cause and the answer is that they are due to a variety of factors; adolescence, hormones, one’s own pH levels, stress and environmental factors. And the myth that chocolate is the source of all evil is again a myth and probably contributes to 0.5% of the problem.

In saying that, your diet and lifestyle do play an important aspect. However once again it all comes down to the individual. For some people, it may be stress that causes the problem breakouts, for others its diet contributions. I found that cutting out dairy helped immensely. Also, a no brainer is to stay hydrated and flush out those toxins by drinking water. Get into the habit of always having a bottle next to you. It is said that 70% of the population are dehydrated. In a few months of consistently chugging water, you will have no problem gulping down 2L of water. And your body will yearn for water because it now knows how vital it is in order to sustain a healthy body and mind.

And lastly, don’t forget to remove your makeup and cleanse your face in the morning and night. It sounds obvious but many people forget how much dirt and toxins fill your pores that need to be removed ASAP. Once the pores are filled with dirt, they begin to expand, leaving room and chance for a pimple to grow and over time, your face will become coarse and pores enlarged. When washing your face, use warm water to help open your pores and when rinsing, use cold water to close the pores to reduce dirt from reaching in. Also, never rub but pat your face dry so that you don’t accidentally tear and leave scars on your face.
