Recently, I was browsing through the Sephora website when I was supposed to be working on my Global Cinema analysis essay and it wasn’t until I was well into the 7th/8th page of all the moisturiser products Sephora stocked that I realised the in numerous amount of beauty products released into the consumer realm!
It got me thinking, with this influx of beauty products and tools that have been marketed through social media (Instagram in particular with those beautiful fitness models promoting the latest ‘god-send’ product), how on earth is one supposed to rummage through and find products that actually make a noticeable difference? So with that being said I have shared with you my top 5 holy grail beauty items that I STRONGLY believe every girl (or guy) must encounter and try.
Papulex Isocorrexion Hydrating Cream
I’m a strong advocate in believing that the secret of healthy, glowing clear skin begins with an excellent moisturiser. It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, moisturising your skin is imperative in retaining skin oil balance. I used to be one of the worst culprits and I’m cringing as I type this but during high school, I would use harsh exfoliators that stripped the natural oils from my face, leaving me with patchy skin and I would be content thinking that the less oils on my face, the less prone I would be to acne. Boy was I wrong! This inadvertently only made me MORE oiler as my skin had to work overtime to replenish the oils extracted, resulting to an even oiler face and thus, more breakouts than ever. Totally cute right…
This moisturiser was actually suggested by a lady who saw me browsing in the skin care section, telling me how it ‘changed her daughter’s life’ (I’m not even kidding). I decided to go along with it since it wasn’t pricey at all ($24) and didn’t want to dim the lady’s bountiful of excitement as she handed me the cream. Three years later and I’ve now probably gone through 6 bottles:)
2. Benefit’s Porefessional Primer
Primers are also an essential for anyone who wears makeup, and it is a product that many overlook or disregard, thinking that it doesn’t noticeably make a difference. In case you’re unsure of what primers do, they are a base product that you apply before your foundation (or BB or CC cream) to allow your makeup to last all day, as it prevents it from sliding off your face later on. It also acts as a barrier from your skin to your foundation which means that all the skin products are less likely to seep into your skin and clog your pores!
This primer is one of my favourites not only because of the super cute packaging, but because it not only acts as a primer, but minimises your pores! Talk about a double whammy! I find that it glides onto my skin so easily and its so lightweight so it feels like you’re not wearing anything at all. And if you’re still not convinced it has a matte finish so it subtly transforms your foundation into a nice velvety consistency. Would definitely recommend and is suitable for any skin colour as it goes transparent:)
3. Mac Studio fix foundation (Liquid and powder)
Every girl loves Mac products, but it can be quite pricey to experiment with all their beauty goodies especially if you’re from Australia, where products cost an arm and a leg compared to those in the US or UK. However, the Mac Studio fix range are products that you cannot go wrong with. I’ve used many foundations before, both drugstore (Loreal, Covergirl 3 in 1 foundation) to high end (Benefit, Estee Lauder) but when I discovered studio fix, I have sadly abandoned my older foundations because it simply does not give the airbrushed, full coverage and long lasting what that these products deliver.
If you’re someone who wants medium to full coverage, then you will fall in love with their studio fix range. I am someone who wants to apply makeup in the morning and not have to worry about touching up during the afternoon and the longevity of their foundations amazes me! It covers absolutely everything and even if you’re heading out to the groceries, apply the tiniest amount and it will give you that effortless glow.
4. John Frieda Sheer Blondes Shampoo and Conditioner
If you are someone who has recently fallen into the band wagon of the ombre or balayage hair trend (me), then you know the physical ache of seeing your hair turn into a dirty brassy colour after washing your hair with regular shampoo.
I’ve had balayage since mid 2015 and was using regular shampoo until early 2016 when I had to re-dye my blonde hair after it turned into brassy orange that was reminiscent of Finding Nemo. After that, my hairdresser advised me to use purple shampoo and I guess I stroke lucky as the first product I picked up (which was the John Frida shampoo and conditioner) worked wonders on me! It’s been a solid 6 months since I last dyed my hair and it still retains the glossy blonde look thanks to Frida’s lifesavers!
You only need to use the products once a week, however I use it after every second wash which is twice a week. This is a miracle product that will save you money and unnecessary trips to your hair salon as you won’t need to re-dye your hair as frequently as you used to.
5. Versace Bright Crystal Perfume
And finally, I’ve decided to top of this list with a fragrance. Because what’s worse than having a flawless face and a cute outfit on if you smell like your neighbour’s manure garden patch?
My signature scent is the Versace Bright Crystal perfume that my boyfriend gave me as Christmas present so the fragrance does carry that extra personal touch. If you are someone who is looking for a delicate, sweet but not too overpowering fresh scent, then definitely give this one a whiff next time you pass the fragrance counter.
The fragrance is long-lasting which makes me adore it even more as it means that I don’t have to lug it around with me to re-spray it every 10 seconds because it lingers all day. Not to mention, the packaging is so gorgeous with a crystal embellished lid and the signature Versace symbol placed in the centre!
So there we have it, my top 5 luxe holy grail products! Let me know if you use any of the products mentioned above and please leave any of YOUR beauty essential recommendations for me:)
